El Grupo Animation & Story Workshops

Our workshops meet every Friday evening (6:00 pm until 9:30 pm) and Sundays from 9 am until 1 pm at the Animation Guild, located at 1105 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank, CA.. We don’t meet on the First Fridays of each month. Bring your drawing supplies (pencils and erasers, sharpeners etc. We supply the paper).


We welcome artists interested in any aspect of production: Story, Layout, animators, clean up, in-betweeners, background artists, after-effects artists and compositors etc.

Our projects are mainly traditional hand drawn, paper or cintiq, although we also have scenes involving 3D (Maya) animation and modeling. Join us.

Homework Week One: Bouncing Ball

Finish the bouncing ball exercise. You might want to do several tests, each with a ball having different weight, such as a bowling ball, a balloon, a tennis ball or basketball.
Also finish the basic timing and spacing exercise, showing: a ball moving across the page evenly, a ball slowing out, and a ball slowing in.

Classes Begin February 25

Welcome to Traditional Animation Basics Class (1 & 2) at the American Animation Institute, 1105 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA 91505. 

The spring session of Traditional Animation Basics begins on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 10 am until noon. This will be a 12 week class in traditional hand drawn animation, and this class will combine the students of both Traditional Animation Basics 1 (beginning) & 2 (intermediate). See ya'!!

Ghibli Test

This is footage from a documentary about the creation of Studio Ghibli's film, Princess Mononoke. During the process, a few inbetweeners took a test to be promoted to key frame animators. The scene they had to do was very difficult and the results were interesting.


To add to that, here's a video of Miyazaki himself animating a scene where the main character takes a tumble. The comments he makes are so interesting and he tries so many different approaches for a scene that's only about 1.5 seconds long.

Nicholas Was...

Finally got one storyboard finished! I started this a year ago when Neil Gaiman released the audio as a free download and suggested that anyone who wants to use it for something creative to go ahead and do so. It was a good way to practice storyboarding and doing some basic traditional animation in Flash. Any thoughts or comments are well appreciated! :D

I have been trying to figure out digital painting and I am finally feeling more confident. Perhaps now better color temperatures.... Any tips?
